ZAIAH MELTZER'S TOP 100 MATCHES OF 2019: #2 AND #1
2.. Malik Brown vs Zach Stone *****, DCA Revelations 5 Night 2 12/21/19 +26
- There’s something to say about absolute pure excitement when seeing a match. When you get the the mindset of “this is awesome” or “holy shit, this is great” that’s when you’ve made a great match. Now when you are able to keep that mindset for nearly an hour, then you know you’ve got something special. Enter in Malik Brown vs Zach Stone. A Rivalry being renewed at the same event that made them marquee names in the land of DCA. Their first encounter was already damn good, so everybody was curious on what could be done to top it. And my God, I don’t think anyone could’ve seen what was coming next. Just 50 straight minutes of fast paced, bloody, balls to the walls action. Not once did it let up and not once did it let you breathe. This thing was crazy from the word go and once it started, it never stopped. Malik had trouble hitting the Jaguar Knee for the majority of the match and Zach couldn’t find a concrete answer on how to put down the determination machine. All the while, you had no idea who was going to walk out the winner. It was complete chaos and the good kind at that. I could go over probably the overuse of some of the same match or how it probably didn’t “need” to go this long, but those are all moot points. When you have a match that has an entire chat room going crazy until the very end, you’ve done your job. You’ve created something special and you also created a moment
1. Edward Elric vs Haru Glory *****, ACW Animania V 05/07/19 +29
- I think I would be doing a great disservice to everyone for not making this match #1 on my list. I mean just from the hype packages and crowd reaction alone should be enough to put this at the top 10. You mix that in with some of the best storytelling I have ever seen in a virtual wrestling match, there was just no way I could’ve left this one off the list. The end of an entire season storyline, coming to ahead with some of the best presentation in ACW history. You had the unfiltered messiah in Edward Elric and the great company hand in Haru Glory. Everything was riding on this one match. After all the controversy and short cuts, someone finally had to be the definitive winner. Everything done in this match is so great. From the commentary, to the camera shots, the call back shots, and everything else in between. It is hard not to just sit back and enjoy the great cinematography that this match provides. Every shot tells a story and every reaction garners more interest in what you are watching. And the in ring action is just as great as well. Pulling off counters and big moves from pillar to post. Wondering which way the match could go at any moment and it was done so. Damn Well. Everyone should watch this match and study it on how to make your big matches all that much more important. It is an absolute master class of wrestling and the complete understanding of the art form itself. It truly is the 2019 Match of the Year.
